The Onion's weekly crossword starts today with a puzzle by me (edited by Ben Tausig), although at the moment it's only available in the print edition (because...adding a link to Across Lite is a complicated web design issue? I don't know), so here's an electronic version for those of you not within walking distance of a kiosk.
Posted by Francis at 02:36 PMThat comes up gobbledy-gook. I want hipster crossword access! (and I don't even have a kiosk to walk to)
Posted by: polyglot conspiracy at October 4, 2006 03:01 PMRight-click and save, then open with Across Lite.
Posted by: Francis at October 4, 2006 03:05 PMOooooooh
Posted by: polyglot conspiracy at October 4, 2006 03:12 PMThe version of Across Lite for Mac you get from that page is, for some reason, an older version which won't work on recent Macs. Try Across 2.0, downloadable from The Times, instead.
Posted by: Matthew Sachs at October 4, 2006 04:41 PMI am so not hip. I didn't understand half the theme entries. Oy.
Posted by: Eric Berlin at October 4, 2006 05:55 PMHi Francis-- I'm the Film Editor of the A.V. Club and I can't express how excited I am about the crossword puzzle. I picked up the print edition as soon as it hit the streets of New York this week (I work out of Chicago, but was vacationing here) and your puzzle was the perfect realization of what we had in mind for the crossword. Some of the clues were deliciously obscure ("Unseen Power Of The Picket Fence"...wow!) and I loved those "on the flip side" clues. For a pop-culture junkie such as myself (and presumably, our readers), it was a real challenge, but not impossible by any means. Beautiful job. I hope our web guys can get this thing up online soon, because I think our readers will love it.
Posted by: Scott T. at October 6, 2006 04:47 PMScott is right. Their readers loved it. Er, I did anyway.
Posted by: bpd at October 7, 2006 11:31 AMEr....this doesn't really belong in the comments section of this particular post (except, thanks for the crossword! very cool)...but I just wanted to say.....I miss Six Things!!!! I suppose it might be related in that it is ANOTHER thing you write that your readers (me!) enjoy. I miss it, and I check up here about once a week, trolling for hot lusty six-on-six (or would it be three atop three?) action. So, I just need to say, I miss Six Things. That's all.
Posted by: Amy at October 9, 2006 11:34 PMUtterly unrelated to this post, I must leave a comment to say that we just finished The Sudoku Code and it was downright gruelling by the end! Thanks for the entertainment but we'd like the past 2.5 months back! ;)
Posted by: Chelle P. at October 10, 2006 11:06 PMOK, i've been trying to figure out how to do this crossword in Across Lite on a Mac, but i just can't. How am i supposed to save the link-file and open it? (If i'm having problems with this, maybe i should lay off the puzzles...)
Posted by: alix at October 11, 2006 10:30 PMAlix, ctrl-click on the puzzle link and a menu should pop up allowing you to save the file on your desktop. Once it's there, you should just be able to double-click it and open it in Across Lite, though if that doesn't work, ctrl-click on the file and select Across Lite from the list of applications that shows up under "open with."
Posted by: Debby at October 11, 2006 10:44 PMi loved it! The flip side clues were great. i was surprised that i got as many as i did. Good job--fun and just hard enough.
