Because of out-of-control spambots, comments have been temporarily disabled. Posted by Francis at 12:31 PMOriginally "comment allez-vous?" was a shortened and polite way to ask "how do you go to the toilet?" The phrase was a polite way to enquire as to someone's health. Apparently many of Louis XIV's courtiers had digestive problems due to overeating. And how do you do?
