Nancy Pearl, author of Book Lust and the only librarian to have her own action figure, gave a very nice review to Holy Tango of Literature on NPR!
Posted by Francis at 02:10 PM in Self-promotionThe only real librarian. Rupert Giles also has an action figure.
Posted by: Lance at August 9, 2005 02:11 PMRock on!
So, is anyone, like, buying the thing?
Posted by: Rick at August 9, 2005 02:19 PMLet's not forget Barbara Gordon, Head Librarian for Gotham City.
Posted by: Scrim at August 9, 2005 04:37 PMMan, Scrim, I already have a thing for librarians -- let's not get me started on having a thing for vigilante librarians in spandex.
Anyway, Rick, I haven't checked on the actual numbers for a while, but I don't think the book's tearing up the charts. I do see periodic sales bumps at Amazon, and the book will be in the next Common Reader catalog (hopefully with my name spelled correctly), so all is not so grim, either.
Posted by: Francis at August 9, 2005 05:03 PMFrequent commenter Mary (me) is also a librarian and the Nancy figurine adorns my desk. I also frequently wear spandex. And other such items. We dont all look like the action figure.
Posted by: Mary at August 9, 2005 05:13 PMCriminy, this comment thread is getting steamy enough that I may have to start fanning myself lest I swoon. I hope you'll put the word out among the spandex-wearing librarian community that there is a welcoming online home for them all.
Posted by: Francis at August 9, 2005 05:34 PMDon't forget Rachel Weisz's character in The Mummy. I'm pretty sure she has an action figure. And Ben Franklin does, too. No word on Lao Tzu or Eratosthenes.
Posted by: Marc at August 9, 2005 06:18 PM*whooooooosh* (helping Francis fan himself so he doesn't get the vapors)
My grandma was a librarian, but any spandex she might ever have worn would have been in the form of a girdle. Sorry, did that ruin it for you?
My Amazon wish list has been decimated, what with my birthday coming up next week. You know what? Holy Tango has been purchased from the wish list! Someone's going to wrap it up and give it to me. If it doesn't show up on time, I'm going to have to start making some calls...
Have you got a funny caption for Mona's bee tattoo?
Posted by: Orange at August 9, 2005 06:22 PMI volunteer at my son's elementary school library, and think I missed my calling. Oh, that Dewey Decimal system...sexy, yes! I've GIVEN that Nancy Pearl action figure as a gift, and the recipient squealed with delight!
Posted by: Mona Buonanotte at August 9, 2005 10:11 PMMona, are you getting a tattoo of a bee, or are you getting a tattoo of a busy bee improving his shining hour by rolling in pollen or looking at porn? Vain minds want to know.
Also, if I ever get around to forming another band, I may have to call it "Tattooed Librarians in Spandex". I know I'd go to that concert.
Posted by: Francis at August 10, 2005 12:19 AMFrancis, the bee on my left shoulder wants to be joined by a bee on my right shoulder, but I can't decide between pollen and porn. "Pollen and Porn"...sounds like a book that needs writing!
And I would TOTALLY go to that concert, and I'd buy the t-shirt. I think maybe you need Six Things for Tattooed Spandexed Librarians!
Posted by: Mona Buonanotte at August 10, 2005 03:51 PMI personally think the pollen bee is better tattoo material -- you know, graphically cleaner and all that -- and while the image may not be lewd, it's clearly in favor of hedonism.

Well, if you're going to be in the band, won't you kind of have to go to the concert anyway?
