Yo!

Holy crap, people, I don't know if this is a delayed boost from The Next Big Thing, or a sudden boost from Joey Reynolds, or what, but Holy Tango is currently ranked #634 at Barnes and Noble. Dude! I am very jazzed.

Congrats! Guess I should've gotten my autographed copy BEFORE you became famous. shit.

Congrats! BTW who is it that decides on your mini-publicity junkets? You or your publisher?

It's been about 50 percent Emmis, 50 percent me. They hooked me up with my Barnes & Noble reading in March, and someone from work hooked me up with the Borders reading that same month. I ended up on the Next Big Thing from chatting with Dean Olsher about my book, and Emmis got me the spot on the Joey Reynolds show.

And a good thing they did, since I can only presume that it was my appearance on the show that has gotten me this big, big sales bump at Barnes and Noble (although why it's only B&N and not Amazon is still a big mystery to me). I'm up to #501 as of this moment, and have squeaked into the top-ten-selling humor books! So. Freaking. Cool.

I gotta say, it makes zero sense to me that your radio appearance would affect sales so dramatically at B&N, and minimally or not at all at Amazon. Did the show point to B&N specifically? If not, I think the explanation lies somewhere else -- a bit of publicity you might not even know about yet. If your publisher has a clipping service, they might want to poke into it.

Small world department: People who bought your book at B&N also bought "Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy" by Gavin Edwards. Gavin and I were, for a time, the two proofreaders at PC Magazine -- the first job out of college for both of us. Didn't even know he'd written a book.

Yeah, I'm a little mystified too. B&N was certainly not specifically plugged on the show. I'll ask my publisher about it on Monday, but I have come up with another half-baked theory: unlike Amazon, B&N bases its ranking on data from both the website and from stores, so if Joey's listeners are more likely to go to a store than shop online, that could explain it. (Or it could still be some totally random other thing. Maybe B&N ordered more books and started displaying them more prominently.)

Update: My trip to the heady heights of pseudo-best-sellingness seems to be ending, as I slip back down to #28,367 (still higher than usual, but, sigh). But, he said wistfully, there was one brief shining moment when I hit #244, and was #6 on their list of the top ten humor books. (Oh, don't worry, I was obsessive enough to take a screenshot.)

I work at a B&N in Minnesota and I staff-recommended your book for the month of April. And I tell everyone I can about it. It's genius I say!
