Life begins the moment you start checking out someone's ass, apparently

Let's hope this is merely an isolated incident, and not a scary harbinger of the next four years: A Texas pharmacist refused to fill a prescription for the pill because she doesn't believe in birth control. Oh, wait, the article mentions quite a few such incidents. Well, fuck.

Great. A belief-centered society in the making.

What I find even scarier is that some states have passed laws, and others are propsing laws, that protect the right of a pharmacist to refuse to fill prescriptions on moral grounds and not jeoparadize their jobs by doing this. Maybe I should convert to Christian scientist, and then get a job in one of those states as a pharmacist. Since I object on moral grounds to all medications other than prayer, I don't have to do anything, ever. So I never even have to show up for work, and they have to pay me and not fire me anyway!

To be devil's advocate for a moment, I think it's reasonable for a pharmacy to choose not to fill such prescriptions if they're against them... I mean, that's no different than choosing not to stock an item. However:

1) I think the pharmacy as a whole has to adopt the policy (not just individual pharmacists who work there) and make that policy publicly known so people don't get surprised by it at the last minute.

2) The fact that the pharmacist in the article refused to GIVE THE PRESCRIPTION BACK TO THE CUSTOMER is absolutely unacceptable. It's one thing to say you don't want to be involved in the process, but it's quite another to enforce your will on the customer, and he should without question have his license revoked. In my humble opinion.

Thanks again, Texas.

It could be worse. At least the pharmacist isn't in a position of policy-making authority.

Hey, look! It is worse!
